The War On Weeds Program is a integral part of the Return of the Natives Restoration Education Project. This project involves students (Kindergarten to University), teachers, and the community, in the restoration of native habitats by controling invasive weeds and planting native plants.
Why we do it? The Monterey area's natural landscape and ecosystems are under siege from an army of invasive "exotic" plant species or WEEDS. Most have been introduced for horticultural purposes, or came as agricultural stowaways, from areas of the world that have similar climates to central California.Ü Spreading onto disturbed soils such as road cuts, and lacking natural enemies, these non-native invaders quickly replace native plants and overrun fragile ecosystems.
What could happen if we don't do something?
Loss of diversity: Reduced diversity of terrestrial and aquatic animals Loss of native plants through competition
Drastic "food chain" disturbances as native species are forced out: Practical consequences: Increased fire hazard Loss of usable land for crops Decreased land value
Do you have what it takes to fight the "War on Weeds"?
If you can do the following: Remove weeds from our own property Educate and recruit our neighbors, friends, and government Support weed control projects Plant native plants
Then you can be a "War on Weeds Weed Warrior"
